In North America, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has regained the box office crown from “Alien: Romulus,” pulling in $18.3 million in its fifth weekend in theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Marvel’s mash-up sequel to its 2016 hit edged out the latest installment of the long-running “Alien” franchise, which took in $16.2 million one week after opening in first place, Comscore reported.

“Alien: Romulus” added $57.8 million globally over the weekend, boosting its worldwide haul to $225.4 million.

“It Ends with Us,” a domestic violence drama starring Blake Lively — who is married to “Deadpool & Wolverine” star Ryan Reynolds — took in $11.8 million Friday through Sunday in its third weekend in North American theaters.

“Blink Twice,” a thriller starring Channing Tatum and directed by actress Zoe Kravitz, opened with $7.3 million for fourth place.

Fifth place went to the faith-based drama “The Forge,” which opened with $6.6 million.

With $1.21 billion worldwide to date, “Deadpool & Wolverine” becomes the eighth-biggest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having passed “Captain America: Civil War” ($1.155 billion) and expected to soon overtake “Iron Man 3” ($1.215 billion) to claim the No. 7 spot, Variety reported.

In its third weekend earlier this month, “Deadpool & Wolverine” became the second R-rated film to top $1 billion at the global box office – and it’s on its way to becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. (With CNS report)
